Tartare Café + Wine Bar in Galway city — which is part of JP McMahon and Drigin Gaffey’s EATGalway restaurant group – was named as a new entry in the prestigious Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2019 Bib Gourmand awards list, which highlights restaurants that offer good quality, good value cooking, in an announcement on Friday the 28th of September.
JP McMahon said, “We are delighted with being awarded the Bib Gourmand from Michelin. We have worked hard to bring something unique to Galway. Congratulations to all of our staff.”
Drigin Gaffey said, “Thank you to our customers who have supported us from the start. Galway’s West End now has a Michelin star and two Bib Gourmand restaurants.”
Tartare, which opened one year ago on Lower Dominick Street in Galway, is inspired by JP and Drigin’s visits to Copenhagen and Berlin, and showcases the outstanding but underappreciated quality and legacy of oysters and grass-fed beef as local West of Ireland ingredients. The Beef Tartare and Oysters are signature dishes, and Tartare’s other key focus is organic and biodynamic wines.
All of the dishes on both the daytime, evening and Sunday brunch menus draw on a wealth of in-season West of Ireland produce.
Rebecca Burr, Director of the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland, said: “Prices and value for money are important, but the Bib Gourmand is about much more; it’s about the ethos and philosophy of a restaurant. The Michelin Inspectors love finding new Bib Gourmands and they’re always hugely popular with our readers.”
