New ‘Neighbourhood Bakery’ Opens in Galway

Marmalade Bakery, which describes itself as a ‘neighbourhood bakery’, has opened in Galway’s city centre on Middle Street.

Marmalade is a warm and welcoming space where locals can stop by to pick up their favourite hand-crafted loaf, still warm from the oven, and enjoy fantastic coffee with a freshly baked pastry or sourdough slice piled high with gourmet toppings.

Its sleek, scandinavian-inspired interior with a large glass window allowing customers to watch the entire baking process, sets the scene for this friendly bakery.

Marmalade is owned by Michelle Crehan-Kavanagh of Galway’s much-loved café and restaurant, The Kitchen. Michelle said, The inspiration for Marmalade came from time spent travelling in Europe. In each city and town I was in I always found myself on the hunt for that little corner bakery where you find all the locals and the best food! I wanted to bring this concept back with me to Galway and I’m delighted to officially open our doors to the public.”

Marmalade has two daily bakes to ensure that only the freshest loaves are on the shelves throughout the day, as well as giving the people of Galway an opportunity to time their bread pick-up so they can take it home straight from the oven.

In addition to organic sourdoughs made with top quality local ingredients, Marmalade serves a selection of freshly-baked pastries, a convenient ‘grab-on-the-go’ takeaway breakfast and lunch offering, and freshly-roasted Red Eye coffee from the coffee bar.

Breads available in the bakery include White Sourdough; Six Seed Sourdough; 12-Hour Proved Rye and Wholemeal Spelt Sourdough; Rye Bread; Granny’s Brown Bread with Cuinneog Buttermilk; and a variety of focaccias including Herby Focaccia with Achill Island Sea Salt; Sun-Dried Tomato Focaccia; and Shallot Focaccia.

A selection of pastries are baked in-house each morning and include options such as Vanilla Pies; Raspberry Muffins; and Lemon and Thyme Cheesecake. Dog owners will especially love the Handmade Doggy Treats (and the doggy hook outside for latching a lease).

Breakfast options include their famous Cinnamon Buns; Marmalade Buns; Plain Sugar Scones; Berry and Vanilla Scones; Sausage Rolls; and Homemade Granola Pots. Also available is the bakery’s signature Sourdough Slice, served with Toonsbridge Ricotta, Honey and Sweet Dukkah; Butter and House Marmalade; or Totally Nutz Butter and Banana.

For lunch there will be a rotating offering of delicious savoury tarts, pies, and pastries with seasonal fillings made daily in-house, such as Veggie Pastry with Feta, Roasted Carrot Smash, House Pickles and Rocket and Lamb Kofta Pies. Vegan options are also available.

Marmalade is located at 3 Middle Street, Galway, Ireland. Opening hours are Tuesday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:00pm, and Saturday, 9:00am – 4:00pm.
