Zambrero Ireland Donates 120,000 Charity Meals Ahead of World Food Day 2024. Moving Closer to a 100 Million Global Meal Donation Pledge
Zambrero, the Mexican-inspired restaurant franchise, is on a mission to help end world hunger with a global goal to donate 100 million meals by 2025 through its Plate4plate initiative along with charity distribution partner Rise To Hunger.
With twenty-six locations across the country, Zambrero Ireland, with the help of sports ambassadors, Rugby Sevens Star Terry Kennedy and Olympic Sprinter Sharlene Mawdsley, is rallying the community and asking volunteers to register at zambrero.ie and help pack up to 120,000 meals on Saturday 5th October at St. Mary’s College in Rathmines, Dublin.
Sharlene Mawdsley, the Irish Olympic sprinter said of her participation in the initiative; “I am delighted to support this brilliant cause once again and honoured to be a part of Zambrero’s efforts to combat global hunger. I’m really looking forward to working alongside the volunteers to get a record number of meals packed and ready to be distributed to those desperately in need. It is especially poignant around this time as we mark World Food Day and is a testament to the positive impact that teamwork and community spirit can have.”
As a new ambassador to the program, Terry Kennedy pledged his support for the initiative, saying, “I am a long-time fan of Zambrero as a restaurant and I admire the goal of feeding people in need through the Plate4plate campaign. It is a privilege to be part of this and I’m really looking forward to getting my sleeves rolled up and getting to work.”
The goal for the campaign this year is for over 500 students from St. Mary’s College and 200 volunteers from the community to pack 120,000 meals, bringing the global figure close to 83 million and well on the way to the 100 million goal for the brand. It is the culmination of an entire year of donations by Zambrero in Ireland and around the world, as it pledges a meal to someone in need with every burrito or bowl purchased. To strengthen its pledge even further this year, all burritos and bowls sold on Saturday, 5th October, Zambrero will double its donation so one meal sold; two meals donated.
Darragh Fanning, General Manager of Zambrero Ireland, expressed his commitment to the program, saying, “This is our third year of the initiative, and we have received such strong support from our community of customers and partners that our sights are set for even bigger numbers of meals in 2024. We are further supported this year by our brilliant ambassadors Sharlene Mawdsley and Terry Kennedy, and we thank them for helping us to make an even bigger impact for those in need.
He continued, “We’ve just opened our 26th restaurant in Little Island, Co. Cork and globally, the brand recently celebrated the opening of its 300th location, so our mission to have an impact on the issue of world hunger grows alongside our business. And while one meal may not change a life, a hundred million meals globally will leave a positive imprint on the lives of people that we can get meals delivered to through our charity partners; Rise Against Hunger. We are so grateful to our customers, staff, suppliers, and community partners like St. Mary’s College who join us every year to make this a success.”
Zambrero’s mission to combat global hunger has been unwavering since its inception in 2005. Through their ground-breaking Plate4Plate program, Zambrero donates a nutritious meal to someone in need for every burrito or bowl sold at their restaurants. Rise Against Hunger, Zambrero’s international distribution partner plays a vital role in directing Zambrero’s Plate4Plate meals to communities in dire need worldwide, particularly in regions where access to adequate nutrition is scarce, primarily through school feeding programs.
